So… if you haven’t already noticed from my endless spam and constant need to bring up my band in some form or another. Yes I am in a band called Never Hill.
We have been together for many years and apart from me and my best friend Dan, guitarist who founded it with me, we have had many revolving members. After working with many producers, finally this is our first single where I have been the sole producer, mixer and mastering engineer.
Our song ‘I Don’t Care’ is the song that set me up to a point where I felt confident. The mix you hear today is not even close to how it sounded at the start. I know there is advice out there encouraging you to just settle with your mix and not to ponder too much over it because you are still learning. But honestly… I’m not allowing any music that I’m not happy with to get out there. At the start it sounded, well…shit. So I used this experience to learn and get to a point where I know it sounds good.
I pretty much spent about 8 months playing with every tip or trick I stumbled upon in ‘Sound on Sound’ or even just trying to sonically match tracks I love. I think this worked in my benefit as eventually got it to a point where I was actually proud to show off the result and I’m glad I ignored people that said “Just release it, it should be fine” or “you’ll be playing with it forever”…
So YES record your own band. At least you won’t have someone after you send them a mix saying how bad it is, because you are that guy and you will learn from it.
